Berklee Student Wins Third Place in International Student Composition Contest
June 12, 2007
Berklee student Ho-Man Tin is the third place winner in the 2007 Belvedere Chamber Music Festival student composition contest. His winning piece is called "Samsara (The Cycle of Existence)," written for violin, cello, and piano. It was selected from 45 entries submitted from eight countries.
Tin will travel to Memphis to hear his winning piece be performed by members of the Luna Nova Ensemble at the Belvedere Chamber Music Festival on Thursday, June 21, 7:30 p.m., at Grace St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He will also receive a recording of "Samsara" performed by the ensemble.
The student composition contest began in 2002 as part of the New Music Festival of the Associated Colleges of the South. It was designed to enrich the work of student composers by giving them the chance to have their compositions recognized beyond their home campuses.
Tin, from Hong Kong, China, is a self-taught guitarist whose first performances were with a pop/rock band in high school. At Berklee, he studies both traditional and jazz music, and is majoring in composition and film scoring. He performs with classical guitar quartets and on students' film scoring sessions, among other diverse projects. He has had his compositions performed by the Triple Helix Piano Trio, Esterhazy String Quartet, and the Kalistos Chamber Orchestra. Among his mentors are the distinguished composers Alla E. Cohen, Yakov Gubanov, and Vuk Kulenovic. Tan has also had comprehensive studies in conducting with David Callahan.
