Antonio Sanchez to Perform with Chris Potter and Scott Colley, April 17

Drummer and alumnus Antonio Sanchez '97 will be an artist-in-residence at Berklee from April 17 to 19, and will perform with saxophonist Chris Potter and bassist Scott Colley, Tuesday, April 17, at 8:15 p.m. at the Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Ave., Boston. Born in Mexico City, Antonio Sanchez '97 started playing drums at age five. He has studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City; Berklee College of Music—where he studied with Kenwood Dennard, Jamey Haddad, Victor Mendoza, Hal Crook, and Bill Pierce, among others—and the New England Conservatory. Sanchez has toured with the Pat Metheny Group, Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra, Danilo Perez, Paquito D'Rivera, and others. He has won Grammy Awards for Metheny's Speaking of Now and The Way Up, and Michael Brecker's Wide Angles, and was nominated for Perez' Motherland. He has also been the recipient of several scholarships and awards, including the Buddy Rich Memorial Scholarship, the Zildjian Award, the Boston Jazz Society Scholarship Achievement Award, and Berklee's Most Outstanding Performer Award.

Saxophonist and composer Chris Potter is often cited by critics, musicians, and fans as the finest saxophonist of his generation. He has released albums as a leader and has performed and recorded with Kenny Werner, Red Rodney, the Mingus Big Band, Jim Hall, Dave Douglas, Joe Lovano, Steely Dan, and more. He was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for his work on JoAnne Brackeen's Pink Elephant Magic. Potter's 1998 album, Vertigo, was named one of the year's top ten jazz CDs by Jazziz and the New York Times. His most recent CD, Underground, was released in 2006.

Bassist Scott Colley is one of the most in-demand bassists in jazz, appearing on more than 100 albums, including releases by Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Jim Hall, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, and others. He also has several acclaimed solo recordings, including 1998's Subliminal, 2000's The Magic Line, and 2002's Initial Wisdom.
