This course will encompass the various styles of musical theater during the latter years of the 19th century through contemporary musical theater. The styles will be selected and songs assigned according to the talents of each individual student. Although we will discuss the changing musical theater art form throughout the 20th century, primarily, this course is a practical performance course in interpretation- vocal technique and the application of the tenets of acting to musical theater.
Each student will be assigned and will develop two songs during the course- one dramatic, one comedic. Students are expected to be present at every class to contribute to the discussion of fellow students' work. This includes initial vocal coachings.
Students will be expected to bring songs to the first class that show individual vocal capabilities. Those choosing this course must be individuals who feel confident in their abilities as singers. While there will no audition process--and the instructors are prepared to work individually with vocalists at different levels--students in the course need to feel utterly comfortable about sharing their own work in a group setting.
