Berklee begins giving college credit and certification to online students.
August 13, 2004
Students who take courses through Berkleemusic.com, the college's online extension school, will now be getting a lot more than a solid music education; they'll get the piece of paper, too. Beginning next month, Berkleemusic.com will offer courses for college credit through 17 certificate programs in studio production, music theory, songwriting, arranging, electronic music production, and music business.
These new offerings elevate Berklee's online music education capabilities by enabling students nationwide and worldwide to gain industry-recognized qualifications from Berklee College of Music, earn credits that can supplement music programs offered by other institutions, and secure financial aid to help pay for their education. Students can now register for college credit courses, which begin on September 20.
"During my career, I have worked with a large number of Berklee grads," said Chris Stone, founder of Record Plant Recording Studios. "To me, a musician that has the Berklee stamp of approval immediately commands a certain amount of credibility and respect. I know that they will have a high level of expertise and musical insight, and I can feel comfortable that they will be proficient on the job. For anyone who is really serious about music, Berklee is the place to get a great education and make important contacts."
Berkleemusic.com's 17 certificates will be offered through three tracks: Specialist Certificate Programs, which are sequences of three courses; Professional Certificate Programs, five courses over a one-year period; and Masters Certificate Programs, eight courses taken over a two-year period.
Musicians will also be able to take individual courses to complement degree programs at other institutions. By transferring college credits from Berkleemusic.com, students at various schools will have the opportunity to take advantage of Berklee's unique courses, time-tested teaching methods, and expertise, while moving toward a degree at another college.
