Pat Metheny December 2002 Photo Gallery
January 28, 2003
Dozens of Berklee students got to know one of their idols last month when guitarist, composer and bandleader Pat Metheny spent a full week at Berklee giving master classes, ensemble and instrumental instruction, and two highly praised concerts. Before Metheny's arrivalit was the first of three one-week visits he'll make as a Herb Alpert Visiting Professoronly about a half-dozen events were firmly scheduled. But by the end of his five days on December 6, he had added impromptu guitar labs, band rehearsal drop-ins, jam sessions with students, and social visits with students and faculty. And throughout, Metheny was always gracious, humble, and happy to help students as much as possible.
Although most of Metheny's teaching time was reserved for students, members of the college community, as well as students, witnessed two extraordinary Metheny performances, one with Executive Vice President Gary Burton, accompanied by a student rhythm section of bassist Mark Kelley and drummer Kendrick Scott, and one with Professor of Guitar Mick Goodrick. On this and one other page, we bring you some idea of what those concerts looked like in a special photo gallery. At the bottom of this page, please follow links for articles about two of Metheny's clinics.

In Metheny's introduction of Burton, he talked about being inspired by Burton ("one of my major heroes in life") as a member of his quartet in the early 1970s.
