From a recording of Berklee's Sarah Vaughan Tribute, January 2002.
Some contemporary music comes and goes, but nothing lasts quite like the songs of George Gershwin. Hear how they sound in the lush, swinging style of the pop song's golden age when Berklee presents The Great American Songbook: The Music of George Gershwin at 8:15 p.m. on January 30, 2003, at the Berklee Performance Center.

Associate Professor of Voice Donna McElroy, who has been an arranger/background vocalist on several gold and platinum releases, will sing lead throughout the night, accompanied by a 36-piece all-star band of Berklee faculty members and several students. The group will also perform in a configuration of 13 musicians.

Executive Vice President and vibraphonist Gary Burton, winner of five Grammy awards, will be guest solo instrumentalist. Guest vocalists will include faculty member Marlon Saunders and student Christy Bluhm.

McElroy and the orchestra will tackle a long list of Gershwin standards, including "How Long Has This Been Going On," "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off," and a medley from Porgy and Bess. Musical arrangers for the concert include faculty members and Grammy nominee Richard Evans, Larry Monroe, Joe Smith, and Jay Kennedy.

The concert is open to the general public. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Berklee Performance Center Box Office at 136 Massachusetts Avenue, in Boston. More information is available by calling the box office at 617-747-2261.
