Nearly 250 students, most from Europe, and some from as far away as Turkey and Brazil, gathered July 9-21 for the 17th annual Berklee Summer School at Umbria Jazz Clinics in Perugia, Italy, an intensive jazz workshop that runs concurrently with the Umbria Jazz Festival. Berklee faculty members taught classes, ensembles and private lessons. Student ensembles performed concerts for Umbria Jazz festival goers. At the end of the festival, several students were awarded Berklee scholarships.

Berklee alumnus Danilo Perez '88 and jazz great Wayne Shorter were among the musicians performing on the festival's main stages. Students received some of their best lessons by going to the night time concerts and hearing the masters play.

The Piazza IV Novembre filled up quickly when the Gospel Ensemble, led by faculty member Donna McElroy, took the stage on a Sunday morning. At one point, the musicians had to compete with the sound of church bells ringing in the Piazza.

During an emotional closing day ceremony, top Summer School students earned a total of $65,000 in tuition scholarships to Berklee's full-time degree program in Boston. Ten of the eleven scholarship recipients are pictured above.
