Berklee Guitar Week in April 2002

Guitarists and music lovers of all kinds will find something to get excited about at Berklee's Guitar Week 2002. Running from April 8-12, the week is packed with concerts, clinics, and other special events. All Guitar Week events are open to the public.

Highlights of the week will include guest artist clinics and concerts presented by jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein with his stellar quartet and Dave Fiuczynski with his eclectic rock fusion group, Screaming Headless Torsos. Several Guitar Department faculty members will also perform and give clinics. Check out this special week and find out why New England Cable News calls Berklee the "center of the guitar cosmos."

MONDAY, APRIL 8
7:30 Concert—Joe Musella/Scotty Johnson Group
David Friend Recital Hall—921 Boylston St.

Guitar faculty members Joe Musella and Scotty Johnson lead a band performing a blend of "classic rock and beyond" in the vein of the Allman Brothers, Robben Ford, and others. The band is entirely made up of Berklee faculty, featuring Danny Morris, bass; Larry Finn, drums; and Matt Jensen, Hammond B-3 organ.

TUESDAY, APRIL 9
1:00 Clinic—Rick Peckham—Great Comping
David Friend Recital Hall—921 Boylston St.

Great Comping will be a lecture/demonstration regarding contemporary modal sounds on the guitar presented by Rick Peckham, Guitar Department Assistant Chair. 2:00 Concert—Bret's Frets
Berk Hall—1140 Boylston St.

Student performance group led by faculty member Bret Willmott. Bret's Frets concert will feature some of the most talented student performers at Berklee in a challenging jazz/fusion program. Past Bret's Frets members include Mike Stern, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Bill Frisell, and Kurt Rosenwinkel.

4:00 Concert—Don Lappin Group
David Friend Recital Hall—921 Boylston St.

Faculty member Don Lappin will perform a set of rock and fusion instrumental music. The set will include Don's original compositions as well as tunes by Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, Jan Hammer, and Stanley Clarke. The concert will feature Brad Harbidge on drums, Jordan Scannella on bass, and faculty member Steve Hunt on keyboards. Special guest Joe Musella will also sit in on a couple of tunes.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10
2:00 Clinic—Herb Pomeroy/Ed Tomassi—Melodic Improvisation
David Friend Recital Hall—921 Boylston St.

Professor Ed Tomassi and Professor Emeritus Herb Pomeroy—both master performers and teachers—present a clinic dealing with melody in improvised music, assisted by Bass Department Assistant Chair John Repucci and Piano Professor Paul Schmeling. This clinic is intended for all musicians, not just guitarists.

Peter Bernstein

Visiting Artist Peter Bernstein continues his major residency at Berklee with a clinic dealing with guitar performance on standard tunes.

7:00 Concert—Jim Peterson Group

Faculty guitarist Jim Petersen will lead his high–energy funk group through original arrangements with a few different twists than you might expect.

8:15 Concert—Peter Bernstein Group

New York City jazz guitarist leads an all-star ensemble performing original and standard tunes. The group consists of an incredible all-star line-up: Peter Bernstein, guitar; Brad Mehldau, piano; Bill Stewart, drums; and Doug Weiss, bass.

THURSDAY, APRIL 11
1:00 Clinic—Peter Bernstein—Master Class

Peter will conduct a master class featuring Peter performing with selected Berklee guitar students and faculty.

2:00 Clinic—Abby Aronson— Classical Guitar: An Illustrated Overview
Berk Hall—1140 Boylston

An Illustrated Overview of the classical guitar. This is a presentation with visual and listening illustrations with a few surprise guests. The clinic will chronicle the development of the classical guitar through history to today. For more on Abby, please check out her Website.

4:00 Clinic—Dave Fiuczynski —Contemporary Guitar Techniques
Berklee Performance Center—136 Mass. Ave.

Dave will discuss creating an improvisational solo using Indian and other eastern sounds to develop melody. He will also field questions on technique and whatever topics the audience would like to talk about. In the clinic, Dave's band, Screaming Headless Torsos, with drummer Gene Lake, percussionist Daniel Sadownick, and vocalist Dean Bowman will also perform and help Dave with demonstration of concepts.

7:00 Concert—Michael Williams and Friends

Faculty guitarist Mike Williams will be performing a few new compositions, as well as originals from his CD "Late Night Walk," which blends element

8:15 Concert—Dave Fiuczynski & Screaming Headless Torsos

Dave Fiuczynski will perform with Screaming Headless Torsos, featuring drummer Gene Lake, percussionist Daniel Sadownick, and vocalist Dean Bowman, marking a reunion of the original line–up from the 1996 live CD. This is a one–time opportunity to see the band reunited with singer Dean Bowman. Jonathan Maron will be performing on bass. For more on the group, please check out www.torsos.com.

FRIDAY, APRIL 12
10 am–5pm—Special Events presented by Jon Damian

Professor Jon Damian's Buddy System Marathon (Uchida Building, Room 523) featuring many of Berklee's most talented students in duos. The G.A.R.A.G.E. Sale (Uchida Building, Room 520) features miscellaneous musical items for sale with proceeds directed toward a new scholarship fund.

1:00 Clinic—Bret Willmott: Time for the Future
David Friend Recital Hall—921 Boylston St.

Faculty member Bret Willmott will present a clinic dealing with polyrhythms, featuring examples from his new book, "Time for the Future: Polyrhythm in Harmony." The clinic's primary focus will be on melodic and harmonic applications of various polyrhythms over common time signatures, song forms, and chord progressions. 2:00 Clinic—Jim Kelly: Guitar Workshop

Faculty guitarist Jim Kelly presents a clinic on how to determine what to practice and when. Jim will talk about working on different styles during your practice time and the most expedient and FUN way to go about it. For more on Jim, please check out an article about him and his teachings.

A trio led by faculty member Tim Miller will present a concert of original material from the new CD release, "Sides."

7:00 Concert—Jon Wheatley Group
David Friend Recital Hall—921 Boylston St.

Faculty guitarist Jon Wheatley will perform a trio concert of bebop, blues, and standards. This will showcase his approaches to jazz guitar with faculty bassist John Repucci. Jazz writer Bob Blumenthal once described Jon as "one of the Boston area's best guitarists."

8:15 Guitar Night Concert—Directed by Jim Kelly and Mike Williams

This is a student showcase featuring Romain Pilon, Stephen Pyne, and Anna Elioutina. These three musicians were selected by Berklee's guitar faculty to represent the College's 1100 guitar principals.
