A Mountain of Nominations

Gillian Welch leads a parade of alumni nominated for Grammy awards.

Welch's "Time (The Revelator)" is her third release and second on Acony Records.
Folks have been coming up with a lot of names for the kind of music Gillian Welch '92 creates. Mountain music. Americana. Neo-traditional folk. Alt-country. But if you've listened to any of Welch's three discs, you know that it's merely about good and tender songs that seem familiar and fresh at the same time. One other thing we know: Welch's music is poised to start reaching a larger audience, thanks to earning two Grammy nominations this month.

"Time (The Revelator)," Welch's second release on her own label, Sacony Records, has been nominated in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category and Welch's performance with Emmylou Harris and Alison Krauss on "Didn't Leave Nobody But the Baby," from the "O Brother Where Art Thou?" soundtrack, has been nominated for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. Welch performs on four Grammy-nominated albums this year, including "Avalon Blues: A Tribute to the Music of Mississippi John Hurt" and "Down from the Mountain" (both for Best Traditional Folk Album), "O Brother Where Art Thou?" (Album of the Year), and her own release.

Other alumni nominated this year include:

  • Aerosmith (Brad Whitford '71 and Joey Kramer '71), for "Just Push Play," Best Rock Album; "Jaded," Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal; and "Fly Away from Here," Best Short Form Music Video

  • Gary Burton '62, "Move," Best Jazz Instrumental Solo

  • Michael O. Drexler '96, "The Long Road to Freedom: An Anthology of Black Music," Best Historical Album (mastering engineer)

  • Melissa Etheridge '80, "I Want to be in Love," Best Female Rock Vocal Performance

  • Roy Hargrove '89, "Birds of a Feather: A Tribute to Charlie Parker," Best Jazz Instrumental Album

  • Quincy Jones '51, "Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones," Best Spoken Word Album

  • Alan Silvestri '70, "Cast Away (End Credits)", Best Instrumental Composition (Silvestri composed music for the film, "Cast Away")

  • Mike Stern '75, "Voices," Best Contemporary Jazz Album

  • Jacky Terrasson '86, "Kindred," Best Jazz Instrumental Album

  • Steve Vai '79, "Whispering a Prayer," Best Rock Instrumental

Associate Professor of Bass Oscar Stagnaro performed on several cuts of the movie soundtrack "Calle 54," nominated for Best Latin Jazz Album. Susan Tedeschi '91 performed a track on the compilation album "Hellhound on My Trail:The Songs of Robert Johnson," which was nominated for Best Traditional Blues Album. Paul Boutin '94 was an engineer on the Michael Jackson album, "Invincible," which contains a song, "You Rock My World," nominated for a Grammy in the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance category.

Winners will be announced at the Grammy Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles, on February 27.
