Berklee's Latin Beat

Musicians from around the world converge on Berklee to celebrate Latin music and culture in a week-long festival organized by two students.

Berklee's first-ever Latin Culture Week is a series of concerts and clinics that will showcase the depth and diversity of Latin American musical expression.

Organized by Berklee students Sandra Aran and Sebastian Otero with support from the Mexican Consulate in Boston, the Office of the President, the Performance, Writing, Music Technology, and Professional Education Divisions, College Diversity Committee, Student Activities Center, and student clubs-Association of Mexicans at Berklee, Colombianos at Berklee, Venezuelan Art/Music Students in Boston, and Latino Student Society, the event will feature a wide range of genres from jazz to funk to samba to indigenous folk.

All concerts and clinics are open to the public. All events are free, except for the Latin Faculty Concert in the Berklee Performance Center, which carries an admission fee of $4.

Latin Culture Week is coordinated by the Student Activities Center at Berklee with support from se veral Berklee divisions, departments, offices, student clubs, and committees and the Consulate of Mexico. Jazz saxophonist and composer/arranger/conductor Popo Sanchez with Gilberto Velazquez will perform with a student band as part of Winds Day 2000.

Big Band Chart by Eugenio Toussaint,

The Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra led by Greg Hopkins will perform a composition by Eugenio Toussaint. Following t he performance, Toussaint will discuss his technique in jazz and contemporary classical composition.

Pianist/composer/arranger/producer Eugenio Toussaint will be joined by his brother Enrique (bass), Jon Crosse (saxophone), and Graham Lear (drums) in a performance of Sacbé's celebrated works. One of the most important andinfluential bands in the history of Mexican jazz, Sacbé was formed in 1976 and stayed contemporary for over two decades. A reception sponsored by the College Diversity Committee will follow the concert.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8
Eugenio Toussaint Master Clinic,

Prolific as a composer for not only commissioned classical works but also a jingle writer, Toussaint will share his knowledge on handling a busy schedule of writing for a diverse group of clients, producing records, and performing his compositions. This clinic will cover producing, composing, and arranging.

Los Changos Concert ,

The group began performing as a trio in 1998. Since then they have participated in many concerts and festivals in Boston and New York including a tour to Argentina sponsored by Berklee College of Music. Los Changos will perform original compositions as well as folklore standards arranged with a new perspective. Some of the rhythms they perform are chacarera, zamba, milonga, huayno, vidala, candombe and tango.

Vocal Summit Concert with Katie Viquiera and Magos Herrera,

Katie Viquiera will present her show of contemporary tango displaying her unique blend of the richness and sophistication of jazz with the passion of tango.Viqueira is supported by a classic trio with Fernando Michelin (piano), Bertram Lehman (drums), and Gustavo Amarante (bass).

Magos Herrera is representative of the new generation of Mexican singer-composers with a strong musical career based in the fusion of bossa nova, jazz, Latin rhythms and an special attention to the lyric content, "poesia cantada" (sung poetry).

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9
Master Class with Film Composer/Guitarist Claudio Ragazzi,

For the past ten years Claudio Ragazzi has been scoring music for film and television, theater and ballet as well as performing both as side man and with his own group. Mr. Ragazzi has worked with some of Boston's most respectable and recognizable film directors, including Brad Anderson, for whom he scored his MIRAMAX feature film, "Next Stop Wonderland;" Jan Egleson, scoring the soon to be released "The Blue Diner and Sam Weissman." In 1998, the soundtrack for "Next Stop Wonderland" cracked Billboard's Top Ten list, sustaining it for more than twelve weeks. He also wrote the music for the critically acclaimed "Blue Tango," for The Boston Ballet and the staging of William Shakespeare's "The Twelfth Night."

Lecture on the MFA Collection of Pre-Colombian Art Works by Professor Henry Tate,

The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) is the home of one of the nation's finest collection of Pre-Colombian art. Professor Henry Tate will share highlights of this outstanding collection. Pablo Ablanedo Group,

Pablo Ablanedo will lead his own group, Pablo Ablanedo Group, in a performance of his original compositions. Ablanedo works explore jazz forms that incorporate the South American rhythms and especially those from his native Argentina. Prior to his 1993 arrival at Berklee, Ablanedo was an active pianist and composer in Argentina. He composed for, performed with, and arranged for several groups with his work heard on radio, television, and on the road as he toured South America. While at Berklee, Pablo's talent for jazz composition was recognized. Since 1994 his original compositions have been performed by the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra led by Greg Hopkins.

Linea 3 was formed in 1998. The principal objective of this trio featuring bassist Gabriel Gonzalez, guitarist Francesco Alcacer, and drummer Edy Vega is to create a personal style through original compositions, as well as through the interpretation of music by other writers, giving each tune their original treatment. Listening to Linea 3, one can hear a fusion of styles such as rock, funk and jazz.

Latin Faculty Concert: Mili Bermejo and Victor Mendoza,

Voice Department Professor Mili Bermejo and bassist Dan Greenspan will lead a new sextet, Mirando al Sur: Spirit, passion, elegance..., in the music of Argentina, with impeccable musicianship and an ease that communicates an ancestral love of the repertoire. Featured in this project is Bermejo's fellow countryman Claudio Ragazzi on guitar whose "fiery" style catalyzes the group's performances. The sextet is completed by accordionist Evan Harlan, pianist Alon Yavanai, and drummer Steve Langone.

Percussion Department Associate Professor Victor Mendoza will round out the evening with a performance of the Victor Mendoza Latin Jazz Sextet. Performing original music from his latest CD, Black Bean Blues will be joined Mendoza on vibes by saxophonist Jim Odgren, pianist Alon Yavanai, bassist Fernando Huergo, percussionist Egui Castrillo, and drummer Steve Langone.

Cafe Show: Latin Salsa Party ,

The Cafe, 150 Massachusetts Avenue

Organized by the following student organizations: Association of Mexicans, Colombianos at Berklee, Venezuelan Art/Music Students in Boston, and the Latino Student Society, the Latin Salsa party will feature music from student performers as well as salsa dance lessons and tapas.
