Berklee Trumpeters Sweep Monk Competition
Two Berklee alumni and a Berklee student took the top three spots in this year's Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition, held in Washington, D.C., in late October. 1990 alumnus Darren Barrett (in photo, on right) won the competition and the $20,000 first-place scholarship, while 1990 alumnus Diego Urcola and 19-year-old Berklee student Avishai Cohen '00 (in photo, on left) finished second an
d third, capturing $10,000 and $5,000 prizes, respectively. It marked the first time Berklee-trained musicians swept the top three awards in the prestigious 11-year-old competition. 1986 alumnus Jacky Terrasson won the 1993 Monk competition for piano.
