Curtain Up!

Student songwriters, orchestrators, and performers came together to showcase Berklee's thriving musical theater scene.
April 23, 2010

Drama filled the David Friend Recital Hall on March 2 as Berklee students in several disciplines came together to create original musical theater songs.

The spotlight on musical theater at Berklee has grown ever brighter since alumnus Alex Lacamoire '95 won the college's first Tony Award last year. At the Curtain Up concert, over two dozen singers, four conductors, and an 11-piece band performed 15 songs arranged by members of the Musical Theater Arranging and Orchestration class.

Faculty members Jeri Sykes and Michael Wartofsky chose the songs from a college-wide contest. The matching of arrangers and songwriters mirrored the professional relationship in the theater industry between composer/lyricists and arranger/orchestrators.
