Mathieu Drouin, cofounder of Crystal Math Management and manager of Metric, will present: Strategies for Succeeding Outside the Traditional Music Industry Establishment.
Drouin, named among Billboard's "Top 30 under 30" of industry power players, is best known for the managing platinum-selling indie band Metric for whom he orchestrated a global plan to self-release its last album Fantasies in more than 20 countries on five continents.
Metric went on to sell hundreds of thousands of albums, even more singles and achieved multiple no. 1 hits around the globe. With placements in leading TV shows such as Grey's Anatomy and Entourage, theme songs scored for films including The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Scott Pilgrim Versus the World, as well as an explosive international touring career, Drouin has earned a reputation as an industry trailblazer functioning largely outside of the establishment.
Drouin began his career in technology with a B2B company he founded and sold while still a teenager. After spending the following year sailing around the world working as crew on a tall ship, Drouin briefly studied finance and marketing at L'Universite des Hautes Etudes Commerciales before dropping out to take a job as an unpaid intern at the Donald K Donald Entertainment Group, then one of Canada's largest independent music groups.
Rising through the ranks to become president and a partner in only three years, during his tenure Drouin presided over the company's rapid expansion, including the founding of labels such as Last Gang Records and Arts & Crafts International. He left in 2006 to cofound the Crystal Math Group with longtime partner Françoise deGrandpre; this remains his focus today.
Drouin also functions as an angel investor in select projects and is currently incubating two technology start-ups, including one music related company in partnership with entrepreneur and investor Sean Parker (Napster, Facebook, Spotify).
