Vibraphonist Gary Burton has won seven Grammy Awards, most recently for his 2012 work on Hot House with Chick Corea. Burton taught at Berklee for 33 years, served as the college’s executive vice president, and continues to teach for Berklee Online. He was recently profiled by the New York Times, which noted that Burton “played a pioneering role in the birth of jazz-rock” and “helped change the game for jazz education, which has in turn transformed the broader landscape of music.” The Times adds that “the sound of jazz’s ascendant mainstream” now “bears Mr. Burton’s influence.”
The New Gary Burton Quartet recently released a new album, Guided Tour, and is currently touring the U.S. and Europe. The quartet also includes guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Antonio Sanchez. In the video below, Burton discusses the course of his illustrious career to date:
“The only thing that matters is the song,” says singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux. That conviction, along with a “one of a kind” voice, has carried this jazz artist from busking on the streets of Paris all the way to mainstream recognition. Through distinctive renditions of classics and modern tunes by the likes of Leonard Cohen and the Beatles, Peyroux has proved to be an uncannily insightful interpreter with a consistently impeccable choice of material. Peyroux will bring her band and string section to present an electric mix of jazz, blues, country, and pop -- much of it from her latest album, The Blue Room. Come down and experience it!
