Service-Learning: Connecting Music With Community: IN 290
Number of Credits: 2
Service-Learning is a pedagogy through which students enhance their academic experiences, gain an understanding of civic engagement and important social issues, and work to meet a real community need. Through a mix of classroom and service hours, this program aims to find creative outlets for students, no matter their musical expertise, which will allow for exploration of how their talents can contribute to the larger community while augmenting their skills. In addition, Service-Learning strives to engage students in critical discussion and reflection about their own identities as members of a community and all of the roles and responsibilities associated with active citizenship.
In this program, students will work with a local community agency and support music in some capacity, depending both upon student interests/expertise and the needs of the agency. Projects are chosen in order to guarantee solid partnerships with the community and mutual benefit. Students will complete a minimum of 45 hours of service over the 10 to 14 week semester, participate in online discussion with classmates, complete assigned readings and journal entries, and write a final paper.
- Students must have at least a fourth-semester standing to participate and will receive two general elective credits for completion of the course.
- 45 hours of service over the 10 to 14 week semester (three to five hours/week), readings, online discussion, bi-weekly journals, and final paper.
- Students will engage in active reflection about their own development, issues of diversity, civic engagement and active citizenship, and the role of music in the community/organization.
- Examples of possible projects include:
- Working to develop an arts/concert series for a community center (booking, marketing, sound/stage set-up, etc.)
- Planning and implementing a music class for an after-school program.
