Summer London Internship Program: FAQ
Which majors can apply?
This program is open to all majors, but will not fulfill degree and licensing requirements for Music
Therapy and Music Education students.
How many Berklee credits is this program worth?
Interns will be required to intern at the internship site for approximately 20 hours week and attend a
British Life and Culture class two-days per week. Participants will enroll in IN-498 and earn 6-credits
upon successful completion of the program.
What semester do I need to be to participate in this program?
You must have a minimum of 5th semester standing and/or completion of 50 Berklee credits.
Can Berklee alumni participate in this program?
Yes, but if there are more applications than space available in the program, priority will be given to
currently enrolled students.
Am I eligible for financial aid if I participate in this program?
Yes, in order to be eligible for financial aid you must be enrolled at least as a "half-time" student. With
this program, you will be enrolled "half-time", therefore eligible for a partial aid package. Check with
your financial aid advisor for details.
Will I need to obtain a student visa to intern in London?
Yes. The UK requires students from most countries to obtain a Tier 4, General Student Visa. Upon
acceptance into the program, more information is provided about the visa application process. To
learn more, visit this website: http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/. The cost is approximately $200.
Residents of the European Union (i.e. if you hold an EU passport) are exempt from this requirement.
Are any of the internships in London paid positions?
No, all internships through the London Internship Program are unpaid.
Will my current scholarship apply to the cost of this program?
It depends on the scholarship. Check with the Office of Scholarships and Student Employment to find
out for sure.
What types of internships are available in London?
London is one of Europe's largest cities, as well as one of the world's leading cultural and artistic
centers. Internship placements will be based on your area of interest, as it relates to your major. Some
possible areas include record labels, radio, music venues, advertising/public relations, recording
studios, etc. Ask the OEL for a brochure outlining some of the sites that have hosted interns in the
past. If you are accepted into the London Internship Program you will be guaranteed an internship
placement.
If I am a Music Business major, will an internship through the London Internship
Program fulfill my internship requirement?
Yes, an internship taken for credit through the London Internship Program that closely relates to your
major may fulfill the Music Business internship requirement by means of Credit By Exam (CBX).
CBX is subject to approval from the Chair of Music Business. For more details, ask the OEL or your
Department Chair.
Can I do this internship in addition to IN-497, XX-495 and IN-103?
Yes, you may only participate in the London Internship Program once, but may complete it in addition
to the Los Angeles Internship Program (IN-497), Major Specific Internship (XX-495) and the
Internship Certificate Program (IN-103).
My parents live in London, can I waive the assigned Berklee housing?
The London Internship Program integrates academics and experiential learning through internship
participation and the Berklee community through living in student housing in order to promote career
development and personal growth. Living together as a cohort of students provides a safe and
comfortable living/learning community that supports educational, emotional, and social
development/growth. We require all students that participate in this program to live in the apartment
assigned by Berklee College of Music in London.
The housing is centrally located and all apartments are within a short walk to tube stations. The
apartments are furnished and come equipped with a full Housewares Package.
Are meals included in the housing cost?
No, you are responsible for your own meals. All apartments have full kitchens.
Will I need a car while in London?
No, London has an exceptional public transportation system, which includes both subway and bus
routes. You are responsible for the cost of all transportation while living in London, as well as the cost
of airfare to and from London.
Will any student employment (work study) positions be available in London?
No, there will be no student employment positions available.
Do programs like this exist in other cities?
Berklee's Los Angeles Internship Program is also a residential internship program. Additionally, you
may participate in a Major Specific internship (XX-495) or the Internship Certificate Program (IN-
103) in any city of your choice. See the Office of Experiential Learning for more details.
