L.A. Program FAQ

The Berklee College of Music Internship Program in Los Angeles is an internship-based program that provides students an opportunity to gain professional experience in their chosen field. All internships take place in the Los Angeles area. Students are required to attend orientation sessions at Berklee and in Los Angeles. This internship program is an excellent way for students to spend a semester discovering the L.A. scene, making connections in the field, and applying what they have learned in the classroom into the job setting, all while remaining a part of the Berklee community.

  • Interns are required to complete a minimum of 300 hours over the course of 10 to 14 weeks at an L.A.-based internship site and attend evening workshops.
  • Students must complete an extensive application process to participate in this program.
  • To be eligible, students must meet certain requirements, including satisfactory completion of 50 credits (fifth-semester standing) by the start of the internship (meaning that they may start the process during their fifth semester), a satisfactory GPA (3.0 GPA in major, 2.5 overall GPA), approval from the OEL, and approval from their international advisor if necessary.
  • Students must be in good judicial and financial standing at Berklee, with no unresolved issues at the start date of your semester in Los Angeles.
  • Housing for interns is secured by the college, and is located in a trendy location in downtown L.A.
  • Internship site placement is limited to situations approved by the Office of Experiential Learning.
  • Note: Equivalent credit for prior experience is not available due to the requirement of concurrent contract between the internship site and the college.

The Summer half-time program (six credits) includes:

  • Internship (25 hours/week for approximately 12 weeks)
  • IN-497: Los Angeles Internship course (6 general elective credits for all students)
  • Evening workshops presented by Berklee alumni and other notable professionals employed in the Los Angeles music industry

The Fall/Spring full-time Program (13 credits) includes:

  • Internship (25 hours a week for approximately 12 weeks)
  • IN-497: Los Angeles Internship course (6 general elective credits for all students)
  • PLUS three (3) classes of their choice from this list ¹ :

FS-131: History of Film Music

  • 2 Approved Specified Elective credits for Film Scoring Students, 2 General Elective credits for all other students
  • Open to all, no prerequisites

LMSC-221: Health and Wellness

  • 3 Liberal Arts elective credits, however this course may be used to fulfill the natural science liberal arts requirement for all students
  • Open to all, Prerequisite: LCOR-111

LCOR-223: Western/World Civilization Topics Course in Intercultural Communication

  • 3 Core Liberal Arts required credits for all students
  • Open to all, prerequisites include LCOR-111 or LCOR-112

IN-290: Service Learning: Connecting Music with Community

  • 2 General Elective Credits for all students
  • Open to all, no prerequisites

MB-335: International Industry Operations: Music Publishing

  • 2 Required credits for Music Business/Management majors on the ÒManagementÓ track, 2 General Elective credits for all other students
  • Open to all, prerequisites only apply to MB/M students and include MB-201, MB-211, and MB-225

LSOC-355: Urban Sociology

  • 3 Liberal Arts elective credits, however this course may be used to fulfill the social science liberal arts requirement for all students
  • Open to all, Prerequisite: LCOR-112

PW-365: Orchestral Mock-Up Production

  • 2 Approved Specified Elective credits for Music Synthesis, Film Scoring, and Contemporary Writing and Production majors
  • Open to FS, CW/P, and MS majors, Prerequisites: CW-311; or FS-340, FS-341, and FS-361; or MS-321

MP-421: Music Production for Visual Media

  • 2 Required credits for Music Production and Engineering majors
  • Open to MP/E majors, Prerequisites: MP-320, and MP-341

MB-433: Current Issues in the Music Industry

  • 2-Approved Specified Elective credits for Music Business/Management students, 2-General Elective credits for all other students
  • Open to all, prerequisites only apply to MBM students and include MB-201, MB-225, MB-275, MB-301 and either MB-255 or MB-355


¹ In order for a class to be taught in Los Angeles, a minimum of three students must register for each class. If a course is not populated according to this rule, students will be asked to register for an alternate selection.
