Conservatorio Musical Souza Lima, Sao Paulo, Brazil
Thanks to its more than 35 years of experience teaching popular and traditional music in Brazil and its five-year partnership with Berklee College of Music, Conservatório Musical Souza Lima has acquired the exclusive right to develop the first international music college, Souza Lima & Berklee. This achievement reflects Berklee’s recognition of the important work performed by our institution throughout the years.
Souza Lima’s renowned faculty enables students to acquire an excellent academic and practical education. The teaching material is some of the best available both nationally and internationally, and Souza Lima also offers workshops, seminars, contests, exclusive master classes, and rooms equipped with top-quality equipment for music education. The institution has adopted an outstanding teaching method and keeps an exclusive agreement with Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
Souza Lima students also take advantage of our facilities—a modern auditorium, studios for rehearsals and recording, library, study rooms, video rooms. Our professors lead student bands, orchestras, trios, and choruses, with performances at colleges, schools, and clubs. For more than three years, Souza Lima has been keeping two exclusive hostels for students with accommodation issues.
The admission process for students takes place twice a year, during months of December/January and July, with limited vacancies. The program is two years long, divided into four semesters (periods of six months) for the following instruments: piano, guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, and voice, among others.
Students stay for two years at Souza Lima & Berklee, in São Paulo, and finish their last two years at Berklee, in Boston, in order to receive their degree from an American college. All the courses studied, with the appropriate credits obtained from Souza Lima & Berklee, will be transferred automatically to Berklee’s curriculum.
Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to participate annually at auditions, which have been carried out for more than five years at Souza Lima and for which Berklee offers Brazilian candidates more than $150,000 in partial scholarships.
At the end of the course of study, Souza Lima offers a Souza Lima certificate, the certificate of music technician (recognized by the Secretary of Education of São Paulo), and transfer credits to Berklee. In order to obtain these certificates, the student must have finished secondary school, which will be required to enter college. The student also must take instrumental and theory tests during the admission process.
Some of today’s top composers, instrumentalists, singers, professors, and arrangers are Berklee alumni: Nelson Ayres, Gary Burton, Bill Frisell, Quincy Jones, Diana Krall, Wayne Krantz, Joe Lovano, Branford Marsalis, Christian McBride, Greg Osby, John Scofield, Luciana Souza, and Mike Stern, among others.
Souza Lima seeks to help make students’ dreams come true by studying abroad, saving money, and by studying at the college of their dreams. Since 1983, Souza Lima has held more than 2,600 events, including recitals, workshops, contests, festivals, and master classes.
