The ICOM Experience
ICOM offers degree, diploma, and certificate programs in the fields of performance, arranging, music production and technology, and music business.
Performance majors receive extensive theoretical and practical training, focusing on style analysis, private instruction, and ensembles. The arranging major covers concepts relating to instrumentation, orchestration, music technology, and composition in a variety of musical styles. Students enrolled in the music production and technology program learn the musical aspects of production as well as the principles of sound engineering methods, real-time performance synthesis, sound design, and production techniques. Those in the music business major cover event and artist management, music publishing, marketing, entrepreneurship, record company operations, and e-commerce.
In addition to music concentrations, ICOM also offers general education subjects. ICOM faculty are qualified individuals who bring with them years of experience in the areas of teaching, performance, production, and music business. A large number of full-time faculty at ICOM hold graduate degrees in specialized areas of music technology and composition.
The Visiting Artist Series brings world-class musicians to ICOM to conduct clinics, seminars, and master classes. ICOM plays host to two large concerts a year under its ICOM Celebration Series banner. These concerts are held at premier locations such as the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center and attract thousands of attendees each year. The Celebration Series production is completely run by students with supervision from faculty.
In line with the college's goal to upgrade the standard of music in Asia Pacific, ICOM provides excellent facilities to cater to the diverse aspects of a student's musical development. Facilities that students can take advantage of include acoustically designed private practice rooms and ensemble rooms, a 150-seat recital hall, a recording studio, and the region’s first surround-sound audio-video suite. ICOM also provides a comprehensive music library that includes online libraries and WOWLoud, which is a music portal for legal downloads of over 1 million music titles.
ICOM has undertaken the responsibility to enhance the standard of music in the region by providing the best possible academic program, facilities, and faculty in order to help students meet the challenges of the music industry and to spearhead innovation. By establishing ICOM, the college's founders and leaders have answered the call of the Malaysian government, in support of the Vision 2020 goal, to promote Malaysia as a regional center of educational excellence in music.
