Benefit Plan or Program

Who is Eligible

Medical Insurance (Tufts Health Plan)
There are several options for comprehensive coverage for eligible faculty, staff, and their families, including coverage for prescriptions. There are no limitations for pre-existing conditions. All plans satisfy the definition of "creditable coverage" under the Massachusetts health care reform law.
  • Full-time faculty and staff
  • Faculty with a Transition Contract Agreement
  • Part-time faculty members, per the Faculty Contract Agreement
  • Part-time staff scheduled to work at least 910 hours per year (i.e., 50 percent of full-time)
  • Not available to temporary staff
Dental Insurance
There are several options for comprehensive coverage for eligible faculty, staff, and their families. This coverage includes a large network of participating dentists and incentives for preventative care.
Life Insurance
Berklee offers basic coverage at no cost to you plus voluntary coverage that you may purchase, including voluntary coverage for spouses and children. Berklee pays the full cost of basic coverage, and enrollment in basic coverage is automatic. All coverage is "term insurance" (i.e., no cash value or investment feature).
Disability Insurance
Berklee offers income continuation in case you cannot work due to non-work-related illness or injury. This benefit is in addition to workers' compensation coverage that provides protection in case of injury on the job or work-related illness.
Medical and Dependent Reimbursement Accounts
(Flexible Spending Accounts)
This pre-tax savings account reimburses you for planned medical and dental expenses not covered by insurance and/or certain planned dependent care expenses.
  • All faculty and staff
Retirement-Defined Benefit Pension
This "defined benefit" pension plan is designed to provide a benefit payable as lifetime monthly income at retirement. Berklee pays the full cost of the plan, and enrollment is automatic.
Hired before 1/1/2012:

  • Full-time faculty and staff
  • Faculty with a Transition Contract Appointment
  • Certain part-time faculty who convert to full-time 1/1/2012 or later per the Faculty Contract Agreement
  • Part-time staff who work at least 600 hours per year
  • Not available to temporary staff
Retirement-403(b)
This is a voluntary, "defined contribution" plan. You invest for your future via payroll deduction contributions. Berklee will match a portion of your contributions if you are eligible for Berklee health insurance.
Employee pre-tax contributions:

  • All faculty and staff

Berklee matching contributions:

  • Same as eligibility for health insurance

Berklee basic contribution (3%):

  • Full-time faculty and staff, and part-time staff scheduled to work at least 910 hours per year (i.e., 50% of full-time)

Hired 1/1/12 or later

Commuting Program
Staff may receive $15 each month toward the cost of MBTA passes. This pre-tax payroll deduction is available for all employees to pay the balance of MBTA or parking expenses. Annual IRS dollar limits apply.

  • Not available to temporary staff
Staff Professional Development/Tuition Benefits
Berklee offers sponsored training and development courses/workshops, including courses offered by member institutions of the Boston Consortium for Higher Education.

Tuition is waived for approved courses at Berklee and Fenway-area ProArts Consortium institutions.

Tuition reimbursement (75%; dollar limits apply) is available for work-related study at some other accredited universities.

Paid Time Off (PTO)
Berklee offers paid time for vacation, illness, and to take care of personal business. PTO is accrued on a biweekly basis, according to the payroll schedule.
  • Full-time staff, excluding chairs
  • Part-time staff scheduled to work at least 910 hours per year (i.e., 50% of full-time)
  • Not available to temporary staff

Confidential assistance for you and your family is available in areas such as child and elder care, short-term counseling, stress management, relocation advice, legal advice, and financial counseling. Your participation is strictly confidential.
