Reporting to the Chair of the Liberal Arts Department, the Assistant Chair will assist with all aspects of the academic and administrative leadership of the department. The Assistant Chair will be a teacher and a scholar of outstanding, wide-ranging intellect and curiosity. S/he must have strong leadership qualities and managerial and organizational skills. The ideal candidate will have a terminal degree in an appropriate discipline and a record of engagement with interdisciplinary approaches, arts education, core curriculum issues, and faculty development. Responsibilities



• Work collaboratively with the Chair, providing leadership in the development, review and management of curriculum.

• Assist the Chair with faculty management including classroom observations, faculty development, mentoring, consultation, and evaluation.

• Assist the Chair with a variety of administrative duties pertaining to the operating budget, implementing the most beneficial and creative use of allocated funds.

• Work with the Chair in developing departmental goals and reports.

• Assist with student advising and placement of entering students in core writing and other Liberal Arts classes.

• Assist with both department and interdepartmental activities.

• Assist with event programming and planning.

• Serve on departmental, divisional, and college committees as needed.

• Maintain a teaching load of between one and three sections of department courses during the fall and spring semesters.


Qualifications • Substantial teaching experience is essential.

• Doctorate in appropriate discipline required; doctorate in a mathematics or natural science discipline, or in music, ethnomusicology or music history, preferred.

• Well-developed technology skills are required.

• Administrative experience at the college level, including familiarity with interdisciplinary approaches, arts education, core curriculum issues, and faculty development strongly preferred.

• Experience in curriculum development and in the assessment of student learning preferred.

• Necessary skills to help organize an annual department symposium and numerous events.

• A critical interest in working in a diverse workplace with a multicultural student body.
