James Williams, Alan Dawson, Boston Jazz Society Scholarship

Boston Jazz Society

Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, pianist James Williams played with many of the great names in jazz, including Milt Jackson, Art Farmer, Sonny Stitt, and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. In addition to his own music, Williams was a dedicated educator, and taught at Berklee in the mid-70s.

Legendary drummer Alan Dawson taught at Berklee for many years, coaching many of today's best-known drummers, inlcuding Tony Williams, Terri Lyne Carrington, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, and Kenwood Dennard.

The Boston Jazz Society honors these great artists with the 'James Williams, Alan Dawson, Boston Jazz Society Scholarship,' which will provide scholarship support for an outstanding African-American continuing student interested in jazz who needs the funds to complete his or her education at Berklee.
