African Art 1 : Marionette

Made by the Bambara people of Mali, this human figure's articulated arms end in enlarged hands held akimbo, typical for the culture's marionette rituals. The arms are attached to the figure with hand-forged iron strips and leather. An old man's elongated face sprouts horsehair whiskers along the chin line. He wears a cloth hat, and his torso is covered symbolically with a burlap shirt. The figure sits on four stylized feet, which in turn rest on a rectangular pedestal encased in a traditional Bambara mudcloth called Bogalan Fini. Wood, cloth, iron, leather, horsehair, and stone, 33" tall, 6-3/4" deep, 16-1/2" wide.
