Before becoming artistic director of the American Roots Music Program, Matt Glaser chaired the String Department for 28 years. Glaser is the first and only recipient of the Stéphane Grappelli Memorial Award, recognizing his contribution to teaching improvised string music. He has performed widely in a variety of idioms ranging from jazz to bluegrass to early music, and written four books. He advised on and appeared in the Ken Burns documentary Jazz. He has performed at the White House, and at Carnegie Hall with Yo-Yo Ma and Mark O'Connor.
