The performance studies in Latin music minor is designed to enhance student knowledge of rhythms and styles in Latin music, both traditional and contemporary. The minor is geared for all instruments and ensemble ratings, and integrates foundational music learning with advanced performance opportunities. Genre-specific harmony and writing courses are combined, for instance, with high-level ensembles in the Brazilian, Caribbean, and Afro-Cuban genres. Additional labs and ensembles include Global Sight Reading, Advanced Rhythmic Solfege, Bata Rhythms, Afro-Cuban Ceremonial Drumming, and the survey course, Latin American Hand Percussion.
Students will also explore the sociological, political, and anthropological dimension of Latin music by taking offerings in the liberal arts. Classes like Music and Society and especially, Contemporary South American Music and Cuban Culture, will give the necessary historical backdrop to Latin music.
