"The essence of the Harmony Department is music fundamentals as they play out in notation, chord progression, melody, and bass lines. In any other school, they call it theory. And it is theory, but it's much more practical than an ordinary theory class would be. We teach students to take apart the music they listen to and understand how it's put together. They take the music apart like a watch, see what the pieces are and what they're doing. Hopefully, the students learn from that and use that knowledge to create their own music, a watch of their own-but one that still runs." Read more about Mulholland...

About our Faculty
If there is one thing that every member of the Berklee community agrees on, it's the quality of our faculty. It's not merely that our teachers are great mentors to developing musicians or the fact of their extraordinary talent as performers, composers, producers, and business people. It's all of that, plus their deeply held belief that music isn't just a career. It's a way of being in the world and communicating with the people who inhabit it. Our faculty are passionate and serious about music, and they expect their students to be the same way.
If you come to Berklee, you'll be in the presence of not only educators but professional musicians who are among the best in their fields. Many of our faculty have earned Grammy Awards and nominations and have collaborated with the most groundbreaking artists out there. But we've got our own innovators right here, musicians you'll get to work side by side with, like Joe Lovano, Joanne Brackeen, Kenwood Dennard, Donna McElroy, Rod Morgenstein, Richard Evans, and Mick Goodrick. Spend some time reading through our site to learn more. Search below for more about them and the rest of our more than 531 faculty members. There's a lot to learn about our teachers, and a lot to learn from them.
