Berklee Summer in the CityAliya Cycon
Aliya Cycon has been playing piano since she was 5 years old, exploring classical music and jazz as a way to inspire her compositions. At 17, she moved to New York City to train in a classical ballet company, and during her stay she was able to study jazz voice with jazz greats Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton. Cycon also discovered Arabic music in the city, and began to study the Arabic oud. Her Arabic music studies flourished when she went on a solo tour throughout the West Bank in Israel in 2012. She recently founded the Aliya Cycon Project, a band that combines her love of contemporary/jazz compositions with her passion for Arabic music. She plays piano, the oud, and sings in this group, as well as composes and arranges all their music. She will be entering her third year at Berklee College of Music with a major in Contemporary Writing & Production.
