Hiroya Tsukamoto

July 29: Interoceanico (South American world music with vocals)
Guitarist and composer Hiroya Tsukamoto, who leads the South American world music ensemble, Interoceanico, began playing the five-string banjo when he was 13, and took up the guitar shortly afterwards. Influenced by classic rock songwriters from the '60's and '70's, he started to write music while attending high school in his native Kyoto, Japan. Later, he developed a deep interest in jazz and formed a fusion band called Playa Azul, which performed on Japanese radio and at various jazz festivals. At college in Japan, Tsukamoto was introduced to a South American musical and social movement called "Nueva Cancion" (New Song). Inspired, he joined a traditional South American music group called Voces del Sur and performed all over Japan and at the 2000 Kobe World Music Festival. At the same time, he studied with Hiroshi Tsuchino and Mike Stern to hone his skills as a fusion guitarist. In 2000, Tsukamoto received a scholarship to Berklee, where he has studied with Wayne Krantz, Mick Goodrick, and Hal Crook, and received the Professional Music Achievement Award.

Now in its eighth year, ParkARTS began as Mayor Menino's initiative to present a yearlong program of arts and culture related programs and events in Boston's park system. "Swingin' in Mothers Rest has grown into a popular summer series enjoyed by music fans of all ages," said Mayor Thomas M. Menino. "Thanks to the city's partnership with the Fenway Civic Association and Berklee College of Music, we are able to bring another season of top-notch jazz to the Back Bay Fens."

ParkARTS, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department's multi faceted arts program incorporates the visual, performing and participatory arts. The 2004 ParkARTS performing arts program concerts at Boston neighborhood parks will range from jazz to symphonic music. Over 80 participatory arts programs will be offered including arts and crafts workshops and landscape watercolor painting classes.

The Fenway Civic Association, the area's oldest community organization, works with residents, public agencies, and institutions to enhance urban living for residents and visitors. Run entirely by volunteers, it sponsors an annual Rose Garden picnic, Back Bay Fens Bird Walk, and other civic events, which highlight the unique natural, cultural and academic riches of the Fenway. Mothers Rest incorporates Frederick Law Olmsted's vision for the Emerald Necklace and is beautifully nestled on the banks of the Fenway. This area holds all the charm and maintains the beauty of one of the historical areas that makes Boston unique.
