“There’s more to Africa than the Kilimanjaro.” These are not simply lyrics from the song ‘Mwanamuziki’ by Annette “annieSoul” Oduor. This is a message that annieSoul has charged herself with promoting. “We [Africans] are more than just wildlife, scenery, and poverty. We’re creative people with stories to tell and lessons to teach.”

annieSoul began sharing these stories and lessons in 2009 with the release of her debut project, “Mwanamuziki,” which is Swahili for musician. She serves up her unique take on a Swahili (sometimes Luo)-laden, socially conscious neo-soul sound, doused in African rhythms, with just the right tinge of jazz, a.k.a. Afro Soul. Drawing on her experiences in her hometown, Nairobi, Kenya, and across the African continent, annieSoul has come to embody the cosmopolitan and multicultural nature of her hometown. The story continues in “Mwanamuziki in the City.”
