Faculty member David Fiuczynski will demonstrate his "Planet MicroJam" concept. New musical ideas are on the horizon at the crossroads of new beats, microtonal harmonies, and Eastern melodic inflections and improv concepts. The aim is to create music that sounds like a Gauguin painting—a raw, powerful, extremely colorful mix of Eastern and Western elements. [details]

Trombonist Stephanie Baird will be presenting her senior recital with friends (Kata Kozma, Aine Fujioka, Michael Sachs, etc.) and her band Zili Misik. The second half will feature Baird with Zili Misik, a seven-person all-female band that plays energetic roots music of the African diaspora.

New Group

The New Group is a Berklee ensemble with 10 student vocalists and a work-study rhythm section. The group will focus on contemporary ensemble vocals in the jazz style, but borrowing also from rock, r&b, gospel, and pop, in the vein of New York Voices, Take 6, and Manhattan Transfer. Music will be performed with rhythm section as well as a capella with vocal percussion.

The Berklee Historical Vocal Jazz Ensemble recreates the great jazz vocal group music of the 20th century. Music from the 1930s (Boswell Sisters, Mills Brothers) to the 1990s (Take 6, New York Voices) is sung in its authentic style. Associate professor David Scott has been awarded a Berklee Faculty Fellowship and a Berklee Recording Grant to transcribe, arrange, record, and perform this music, some of which has been published by Hal Leonard Publishing.
