Three Day Threshold could be the soundtrack to a shotgun wedding, tractor pull, or dog fight. It's bluegrass on overdrive, it's an after-hours rockabilly prom, but most of all it's a show not to be missed. Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band (a trio) concocts a rousing, hyper, and authentic brand of blues from just acoustic guitar, minimal drums, and the occasional dobro. Former busker Jason Webley's music combines folk, gypsy, and punk. [details]

Conversations about Paul Whiteman: The 70th Anniversary of the 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert

Paul Whiteman’s biographer Don Rayno will present a discography and discussion of the music of Paul Whiteman. Immediately afterward, from 2:00–3:00 p.m., a distinguished panel of scholars and performers will discuss the importance of Whiteman, who bridged the music of the classical and Jazz periods. In addition, 94-year-old Al Gallodoro, a performer in the 1938 concert, will share some of his retrospective of Whiteman.

Total percussion principal Herdi Xha presents his senior recital. The event will include a showcase of arious percussion instruments such as timpani, snare drums, marimbas, drum set, multiple percussion, and hand percussion. Tribute to Paul Whiteman

This performance marks the premier season of Berklee’s first symphony orchestra, the Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra. With Tribute to Paul Whiteman, hosted by Don Rayno, Whiteman’s biographer, the BCSO celebrates the 70th Anniversary of Paul Whiteman’s historic 1938 concert at Carnegie Hall. After intermission, five Whiteman original 1938 arrangements will be performed: "Cowbell Serenade," "The Seventh Day," "Mexican Jumping Bean," "Suicide Cliff," and "Bumpy Weather Over Newark." Big Band Concert

Under the direction of faculty member John Pierce, this ensemble will play big band jazz featuring compositions by artists including Benny Carter, Thad Jones, Pat Metheny, and Charles Mingus, and arrangements by Bob Curnow, Bob Freedman, Sy Johnson, and Brian Lewis. Sections leaders include Maria Defreitas on alto, Matthew Joseph on trumpet, Patrick Kunka on drums, and Brian Paulding on trombone. The group includes students from all over the world, from places such as Australia, Scotland, Turkey and across the United States.

Spring Old-Time String and Bluegrass Blowout

Four student bands will play and sing all acoustic music—first Mark Simos's Appalachian/old-time ensemble, followed by three bluegrass groups directed by Dave Hollender. The bluegrass bands will play traditional fiddle tunes, songs, and instrumentals by Norman Blake, Flatt & Scruggs, Alison Krauss, Bill Monroe, and the SteelDrivers.

Possibly the only turntablist/DJ crew officially offered as an ensemble by any music college in the world, the Mash Up ensemble stirs things up with its first David Friend Recital Hall concert—sure to be exciting and controversial. Four DJ/turnablists, a video artist, an electric fiddler, an electronic wind player, a visual DJ (VJ), an MC, a singer, and dancers span hip-hop, jazz, bluegrass, and house electronica. [details]

David Saw’s engaging charm and appealing style are as obvious in his songs as they would be if you met him on the street. He has toured with Ray Davies and Patty Griffin; Carly Simon featured two of his songs on her 2007 album.
