Mark O'Connor String Quartet with the Berklee Roots Orchestra
Mark O’Connor String Quartet features Mark O’Connor on violin, Kelly Hall-Tompkins on violin, Gillian Gallagher on viola, and Patrice Jackson on cello. Among the most talented and exciting string players on the scene, these four virtuosi combine for an unforgettable evening of exploring new musical territory. The concert’s offerings will include O’Connor’s String Quartet No. 2 (“Bluegrass”), which features blazingly intricate rhythms, “soulful, high lonesome harmonies,” and achingly beautiful melodies. O’Connor’s latest, String Quartet No. 3 (“Old-Time”) was composed on commission for the Quadricentennial of the Hudson River. Each member of the group also partakes in high-flying, virtuoso duets and each of these works draws on O’Connor’s own well-documented (and uniquely American) musical history.
The Berklee Roots Orchestra will also perform. The string ensemble is comprised of participants of the Mark O’Connor/Berklee Summer String Festival and will be directed by Berklee faculty cellist Eugene Friesen. The ensemble will present a program featuring violin soloists Mark O’Connor, Darol Anger, Yale Strom, and Daniel Bernard Roumain. The concert will feature new music from American, klezmer and hip-hop traditions.
