Josh Shpak Band with special guest Shelly Berg
In his third recital at Berklee, trumpeter and composer Josh Shpak, together with a special guest artist, the twice Grammy nominated pianist Shelly Berg, will showcase original music that brings together a variety of influences ranging from jazz, soul, and rock to film music and more.
A Concord Records and Steinway artist and the Dean of the Frost Music School at the University of Miami, Berg has performed with a Who's Who of music legends, including Ray Brown, Louie Bellson, Eddie Daniels, Peter Erskine, Branford Marsalis, Dave Grusin, Woody Herman, Arturo Sandoval, Clark Terry, and Tom Scott, to name just a few. Dave Brubeck said, "Shelly Berg is a great jazz pianist who has a total command of his instrument."
Berg has also orchestrated for television and film, as well as for Chicago, Kiss, Carole King, Richard Marx, Joe Cocker, Elliott Smith, Lou Rawls, Steve Miller, for Ray Sings, Basie Swings (an album by Ray Charles and the Count Basie Orchestra), and Arturo Sandoval's A Time for Love. He has written for orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic and the American Symphony. His orchestrationswere described as "magnificent... incredible" by Johnny Mandel.
Additionally, Berg has performed or arranged for vocalists Gloria Esefan, Patti Austin, Bobby McFerrin, Kurt Elling, Michael Feinstein, Renee Fleming, Gregory Porter, Aretha Franklin, Tierney Sutton, Janelle Monae, Queen Latifah, Lorraine Feather, Monica Mancini, Rita Moreno, Ricky Martin, Kevin Spacey, Dionne Warwick, Carmen Bradford, and many more.
"Shelly Berg burns hard, his fingers flying over the keyboard while his body nearly levitates off the bench,'' wrote a reviewer for the Los Angeles Times.
