The Everything Sheet
What if you could represent all harmonic or melodic possibilities in existence on one sheet? You can! All harmonic and melodic combinations fall into 18 diatonic and 72 chromatic fundamental structures. The everything sheet enables one to see how any lick, scale fragment, or chord one encounters is one of these very limited number of structures and see how it relates to others in the same category. In a sense, it is a form of data compression that helps deal with the limitations of the "wetware" between our ears. Most importantly, the sheet is invaluable in structuring one's practice time in every style of music by clearly and concisely representing all that there is to practice and allowing the student to focus on the specific musical elements necessary to achieve his/her goals. In this clinic, we will take a quick tour through all the fundamental structures and see how they apply to real-world musical examples in jazz, rock and other styles.
