Drummer Ed Soph's professional career spans 40 years as a performer, recording artist, author, and teacher.

Upon graduation from the University of North Texas in 1968, Soph joined Woody Herman's Thundering Herd. He toured with Woody's band, making a number of recordings, including the Grammy-winning album Giant Steps. Moving to New York in the early '70s, Soph worked with Clark Terry's quintet and big band, Bill Waltrous's big band, Bill Evans, Lee Konitz, Vic Damone, and Joe Williams, among others.

Soph is professor of music at the University of North Texas. He continues to perform and record extensively, most notably in a group with trumpeter Marvin Stamm. The group has recorded three CDs. He also tours with pianist Stefan Karlsson and bassist Tom Warrington. The trio recorded three critically acclaimed CDs on the Troppe Note label. Soph is the author of three books, his most recent being Musical Time (Carl Fischer).
