The Berklee Performance Center presents Berklee World Strings directed by Eugene Friesen. The concert will include Bernard Herrmann’s revolutionary score for Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Herrmann’s only score for string orchestra, the Psycho film cues are the perfect sound design for Hitchcock’s black and white suspense thriller and has influenced the use of strings in countless film scores and concert pieces. The program will also feature the premiere of East River Mountain Suite by Berklee faculty composer Bruce Thomas. This three-movement suite is an ode to the composer’s home state of West Virginia, evoking its history and landscape with beauty and rhythmic innovation. Composed for Berklee World Strings, East River Mountain Suite will spotlight a variety of soloists including Alexander Gable, mandolin; Charles Overton, harp; and Na Young Baik and Patrick M’Gonigle, violin/fiddle. Also on the program is “The Passion of Rumi” by Iranian composer Hafez Nazeri. Transcribed and arranged for strings by Berklee World Strings director Eugene Friesen, “The Passion of Rumi” will feature vocalist Mayssa Karaa. Born in Beirut, Lebanon and trained at the Lebanese National Conservatory, Karaa’s repertoire in five languages spans from classical through modern music. Filling out the program will be several pieces written for the ensemble featuring student soloists. “Dan’s Band,” by faculty composer Jimmy Kachulis, is a swinging samba in 7/4 time. “Torkman,” by student composer Milad Zendehnam of Iran, is a contemporary fusion piece featuring Zendehnam on electric guitar. “Maracaibo,” by Eugene Friesen, is a Venezuelan joropo, and a rhythmic etude for strings.

The Berklee World Strings are devoted to the art of ensemble playing and the development of new music that features improvisation and the rhythmic capabilities of string instruments and players. Drawing from Celtic, bluegrass, jazz, rock, and classical styles, the ensemble presents original programs that include new compositions and arrangements from a wide variety of the world’s music. The group features Berklee's finest string players from countries around the world and the U.S.
