Rethink MusicRethink Showcase: Mieka Pauley / Sydney Wayser / Leah Siegel
Rethink Music is partnering with several Boston music promoters to provide conference-goers access to multiple performances by leading artists in various musical genres.
Mieka Pauley began as a solo artist in Boston. Her haunting voice and heartbreaking lyrics gained her more than a few fans, securing her bills with Citizen Cope, KT Tunstall, Natasha Bedingfield, Ben Kweller, Mason Jennings, John Legend, the Avett Brothers and many others. She's performed at the Newport Folk Festival, The Rock Boat and the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, among other festivals; she's performed the national anthem three times for the Boston Red Sox; and she performed on PRI's Mountain Stage.
At the core of Sydney Wayser's music is her unabashed love for gloomy orchestrations and waltz rhythms. There's the tinkling glockenspiel, a lone oboe, accordion and creaky string arrangements, with Wayser's piano work steering the ship. It's an appropriate backdrop for her brooding meditations on misery and heartache, all set in a world inhabited by lurking strangers and ghosts of the past. Think Tori Amos or Fiona Apple with fewer dramatic flourishes.
When Prince calls you a brilliant performer, you know it's a high compliment. The Purple One was referring to Leah Siegel, the singer/songwriter/instrumentalist behind the Brooklyn group Firehorse. Prince was certainly onto something, as Siegel's full array of musical talents is on display on Firehorse's eclectic debut album.
