Thinkin' Big is an 18-piece big band formed in October of 2010 by Jonah Francese. Its goal has always been to play original student charts. Already they have gigged all around the Boston area, in places like the Lily Pad, Kendall Square, and many shows at Berklee. The one thing that makes them special is that it is more than just a "rehearsal and occasional gig" band. It is family. Just the fact that they have some of the best players at Berklee isn't enough. Great cats play together and not sound like this. But because this is a family, they know each other's sounds and strengths, playing off each other and sounding as one—not 18.
Thinkin' Big has always had a unique sound. The arrangements have never been standard or "typical" in any way. With a range from funk to swing to Latin, they have continually pushed the perception of a modern big band. Lately, they have added a timbale and conga player and have been exploring the beauty of salsa styles in the big band setting. With each performance, they get tighter and more sophisticated in their sound.
