The State of Jazz Composition SymposiumThe Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI) Presents: Creativity and Expression in the Arts, an Interactive Composition Workshop with Danilo Perez, Joe Lovano, and Anthony Scibilia
In this workshop, students from the Berklee Global Jazz Institute will perform and present their compositions to BGJI faculty members Danilo Perez, Joe Lovano, and Anthony Scibilia and receive their feedback in front of the audience.
This workshop is part of the BGJI class Creativity and Expression in the Arts, where students explore the many conversations that occur between works of visual art and music. Most immediately, students compose, improvise, and perform musical works and arrangements based on specific examples of painting, photography, sculpture, and hybrid art forms on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. On another, more abstract level, students are asked to think about the structural and poetic correspondences that exist between works of visual art and musical works. Painting and photography form two strong points of focus for this class; still, the nature of our explorations demand a wide and generous appraisal of other art forms, including sculpture, architecture, poetry, poetic prose, as well as historical and critical texts, as these allow us to comprehend our primary objects of inquiry more clearly. In addition to composing and performing musical works, students reflect on their own process in writing.
