Women's History Month — March 2005Women's History Month — March 2005

Women's History Month 2005 at Berklee will feature concerts, films, lectures, and other events focused on this year's theme, The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action.

Among the highlights are on-campus visits from British journalist Jacqueline Springer, who will give two lectures on women and hip-hop, and filmmaker Margaret Lazarus, who will screen an award-winning documentary; an interactive forum relating to the women of Darfur; and the Women Musicians Network concert, a student show featuring Berklee's finest women composers, vocalists, and instrumentalists.

  4:00 – 6:00 p.m. The Strength to Resist: Beyond Killing Us Softly
Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Margaret Lazarus will screen The Strength to Resist: The Impact on Women and Girls. The film explores negative media messages to girls and women and practical solutions. A discussion and reception will follow. Open to the Berklee community, by R.S.V.P.

Dr. Louise Montello presents a weekend workshop, free to Berklee students and open to others for $250, with continuing education units (CEUs) available. Registration via workshop link above is required.

Join a group of Boston women who recently returned from the Darfur region of the Sudan for a community forum focusing on the pervasive violence against women there. This event will feature musical performances, a panel discussion, and audio and video recordings from Darfur. Read more...

Times Vary Women and Hip-Hop: Lectures by Jacqueline Springer
A leading freelance writer, broadcaster, and cultural critic, Jacqueline Springer comes to Berklee for a series of guest lectures and classes open to the Berklee community. Springer is senior broadcast journalist at the BBC and works for 1xtra, the corporation's only black music radio station. Open to Berklee students, faculty, and staff by R.S.V.P.

  Tsunami Relief Effort
Lend your support to a month-long eBay auction to support the survivors of the tsunami in Southeast Asia.

In addition to the above events, on two Fridays this month, March 4 and March 25, films and student performances will be presented in the Student Activities Center, at 130 Massachusetts Avenue. Films will run from 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and performances from 5:00–6:00 p.m.

Women's History Month 2005 sponsors include Academic Affairs, LiveWell, the Music Therapy and Music Production and Engineering departments, the Office of the President, the Student Activities Center, the Student Affairs/Dean of Students office, the Task Force on Diversity in the Curriculum, the Task Force on Inclusion and Inter-Group Relationships, the Women Musicians Network, the Women's Network, and the YO Team. The months's events are coordinated by the Women's Network at Berklee's subcommittee.
