Description

The Free Jazz/Bebop ensemble introduces students to the similarities and the contrasting elements of these styles. By studying the works of composers such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Cecil Taylor, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk etc., each member of this ensembles gains the historical and theoretical knowledge they need to in order to accurately execute some of the greatest music ever composed. Students gain experience in ensemble performance and develop skills such as playing up-tempo, intonation, phrasing, blending, and articulation. This course emphasizes hearing and expressing musical ideas with stylistic integrity, as well as melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic accuracy.
