Latin/Afro-Cuban Jazz

In the Latin/Afro-Cuban Jazz ensemble, students will learn and apply instrument-appropriate roles to perform contemporary Latin jazz. Through participation in weekly supervised rehearsals, students will gain experience in performing Latin jazz that draws on styles such as son, descarga, cha-cha, mambo, danz'on, songo, bemb'e, abaku'a, and timba from Cuba; bossa nova, samba, partido alto, choro and afox'e from Brazil; festejo from Peru; joropo from Venezuela; milonga and chacarera from Argentina. Emphasis will be given to stylistic integrity and individual interpretation, as well as melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic accuracy.
