During the fall 1998 semester, the entire Berklee community was asked to suggest ideas for Berklee's future. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, the Council of Chairs, the Board of Trustees, the President's Council, and the Board of Visitors all participated, offering nearly 10,000 suggestions through a series of small-group meetings, V2.0 Day in September, and a written survey. In March 1999, all faculty and staff received a copy of Berklee 2005: 1,000 Ideas, a booklet in which these suggestions were edited and organized by the subjects most often mentioned.

In Spring 99, the Spring Strategic Planning Committee further organized these 1,000 ideas into the 10 themes presented below:

Teaching and Learning

  • investigate distance learning models
  • review private lesson and lab program
  • improve and expand learning resources
  • provide more "real world" learning experiences
  • provide a more interdisciplinary learning experience
  • continue to explore graduate studies
  • increase internship opportunity
  • consider establishing orchestra program
  • investigate extension programs/continuing education
  • build on special program success
Student Success
  • improve advising programs
  • build on success of counseling programs
  • improve ESL/language skills instruction
  • assess tutoring programs
  • focus on retention/graduation
  • increase student and faculty interaction
  • provide for needs of international studentss
  • build on success of student clubs and organizations
Institutional Communication and Development
  • create an environment for open communication
