3.1 Build Internet Presence
Develop content, technological infrastructure, and professional staff to build Berklee’s web-based capabilities for expanding the Berklee experience, including online and distance education, webcasts, and portal development. Use the Internet to build strategic alliances, and promote the college and its mission.

(progress as of August 2004, August 2003, August 2002, August 2001)

Progress as of August 2005
To date, all college efforts for building its web presence have followed an independent approach, with each area working to meet its own goals and objectives. Good progress has been made on all fronts. The Berklee.edu web site has been improved and expanded significantly, offering many valuable information resources. Berklee.edu is a primary means of communicating with prospective students, parents and the general public. My.berklee.net has shown a remarkable adoption rate and use by both students and faculty as a means of connection to college information systems and services. The online music school at Berkleemusic.com has been firmly established and continues to grow, generating nearly $2 million in new annual revenue at the time of this report. The Berklee Press web site has increased the visibility of the college’s book and DVD publishing operation. The Berkleeshares web site continues to receive considerable traffic and garnered media attention for its groundbreaking work in the sharing of online music lessons.

Progress was made with campus-facing Internet services as well, and these are reported in detail under Initiative 1.4. Course Companion web site use has increased dramatically, and many new services have been added to my.berklee.net, including web-based online registration. Online registration was introduced in Fall 2004 for Spring 2005 semester and was extremely well received by students.

In the current year college Internet principals began to focus on ways to coordinate heretofore independent efforts. An Internet Direction Group was formed by the managers of the college’s various web initiatives. The goal of this group is to create a unified mission statement and strategy for the college’s use of the Internet and web services in the future. A plan to integrate Berkleemusic.com technology into the college’s infrastructure (including connections to Datatel Colleague and other major college systems) is being developed.

With connection to Internet2 on Berklee’s horizon, and a more professional approach to supporting the college’s infrastructure, Berklee Media and OIT are exploring options for bringing more services in-house to contain costs associated with ISP services. OIT is committed to work with appropriate college leaders to plan for appropriate support services to meet this need.

Progress as of August 2004
To date, all college efforts for building its web presence have followed an independent approach, with each area working to meet its own goals and objectives. Outstanding progress has been made on all fronts. The Berklee.edu website has been improved and expanded significantly, offering many valuable information resources. Berklee.edu is a primary means of communicating with prospective students, parents and the general public. My.berklee.net has shown a remarkable adoption rate and use by both students and faculty as a means of connection to college information systems and services. The online music school at Berkleemusic.com and the related career center have been firmly established and continue to grow, generating over $1 million in new revenue. The Berklee Press web site has increased the visibility of the college’s book and DVD publishing operation. The Berkleeshares web site continues to receive considerable traffic and garnered media attention for its groundbreaking work in the sharing of online music lessons.

This year leaders responsible for the college’s Internet presence began to focus on ways to coordinate heretofore independent efforts. An Internet Direction Group has been formed by the managers of the college’s various web initiatives including the vice president of Berklee Media, vice president for information technology, vice president for external affairs, assistant vice president for information technology, Berklee Media technology manager, director of Berklee.edu, and associate director of Web development. The goal of this group is to create a unified mission statement and strategy for the college’s use of the Internet and web services in the future. A plan to integrate berkleemusic.com technology into the college’s infrastructure (including connections to Datatel Colleague and other major college systems) is being developed with cooperation between the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and Berklee Media technology leadership.

With connection to Internet2 on Berklee’s horizon, and a more professional approach to supporting the college’s infrastructure (including a newly renovated and modernized server room and redundant, live fallover server architecture), Berklee Media and OIT are exploring options for bringing more services in-house to contain costs associated with ISP services. OIT is committed to work with appropriate college leaders to plan for appropriate support services to meet this need.

Connected offices include Administration/Finance, as liaison to the Trustees’ Financial Affairs Committee for fiscal oversight of various projects; Information Technology, for infrastructural support; and Academic Affairs, for instructional support.

Progress as of August 2003
The principle goals of this initiative are to implement new activities on the Internet to facilitate and increase effectiveness in the areas of music instruction, alumni relations, recruitment, and community-building.

Beginning in October 2002, the college’s online school web site, Berkleemusic.com, went live. Twenty web-based non-credit courses are presently offered, and all have enrolled students. The job data bank on the site has nearly 1,300 postings so far, and there are also over 1,100 musicians’ resumes posted. DVD master classes are in production, with six currently available on the site for purchase by download or via disk. Course content development continues, along with wider marketing of the site through the efforts of the public relations firm Citigate-Cunningham.

The Web Coordination Group is a standing committee that reviews the goals, projects, and technology needs of the college’s growing number of web sites in order to best coordinate resources and establish shared direction. A governance model for web sites emerging from this initiative will evolve from the work of this group. The primary outcome this past year has been the my.berklee.net portal to serve Berklee’s students and, ultimately, staff.

A major site re-design of www.berklee.edu, the college’s general recruiting web site was completed during the current year.

The Distance Learning Committee, a standing committee led by the provost, has been meeting since 1999. Its planning has supported several interactive videoconferences. Dolby Labs, in Los Angeles, hosts regular videoconferences between Boston and Los Angeles. Some events are for Berklee alumni in the Los Angeles area, and some are clinicians in Los Angeles presenting workshops for Berklee students in Boston. We anticipate having six Boston/LA events during the 2003-2004 year. In addition, a successful six-class course was taught by a Berklee professor to a class of students at Berklee’s partner school in Athens, the Philippos Nakas Conservatory; and the college will soon conduct its first three-way video class connecting Berklee with both Athens and Helsinki, Finland.

Progress as of August 2002
Two-way video instruction continues to be developed.

  • Several international clinics and classes have been completed between Berklee and the Nakas School in Athens. A six-segment class on basic improvisation was offered in Spring 2002.
  • The Dolby Labs facility in Los Angeles has become operational; monthly two-way televised events began in November 2001. Subsequent clinic presentations have included workshops by Eric Marienthal and Peter Erskine.

Berklee Media was launched as of June 2001, and has been developing a website for electronic distribution of educational and informational data, as well as online course materials.

  • Four multi-segment basic courses are currently in development, along with a half dozen smaller, more subject-focused courses. Two of the basic courses are being beta-tested with volunteer participants. Two dozen video master classes are in production, six have been completed. Databases for gig listings, career advising, and message boards have been created and are being tested.
  • Strategic alliances with music industry corporations and non-profit organizations are being developed to support the Berklee Media effort.
  • The Berklee Media site is expected to launch formally in Fall 2002.

The berklee.edu website has undergone an interim re-design.

  • New capabilities for searching, for entering student information, and for alumni have been added including streaming audio and video.
  • Alumni-specific content is being developed by the Office of Institutional Advancement for password access by alumni.

Internal use of web-sharing is being developed for classroom applications.

  • Many classrooms are now equipped to establish access to the central network.
  • Several courses are already using web-based information both during class instruction and as an asynchronous resource to provide course support.

Progress as of August 2001
The principal goals of this initiative are to implement new activities on the Internet to facilitate and increase effectiveness in the areas of music instruction, alumni relations, recruitment, and community-building.

The Berkleemusic.com Task Force has been meeting for two years researching online education ventures, creating business plans, and beginning implementation of the Berklee Media Department. which was authorized by the Board of Trustees in Spring 2001 and has begun its first phase of development, consisting of content creation and site design. Berklee Media publications include nearly 100 books by faculty on music and music teaching.

The Web Coordination Group is a standing committee that reviews the goals, projects, and technology needs of the college's growing number of websites in order to best coordinate resources and establish shared direction. A governance model for websites emerging from this initiative will evolve from the work of this committee.

The alumni website has seen several refinements (see also the Build Alumni Relationships initiative) which will be tested in the summer of 2001. The use of the college website in recruiting is an ongoing project.

The Distance Learning Committee, a standing committee led by the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs, has been meeting since 1999. Its planning supported the first Berklee interactive videoconference in 2000, in connection with the Berklee International Network meeting in Athens. Dolby Labs, in Los Angeles, is planned as a potential host for interactive videoconferences between Boston and Los Angeles, initially directed toward alumni groups.
