Pursue New Directions

We believe it is critical to build Berklee's presence on the Internet, expand relations with alumni, increase college visibility, and meet our facility needs in order to maintain our leadership in contemporary music education. These initiatives are designed to expand music education opportunities beyond the scope of the campus experience and to deepen and broaden respect for both contemporary music and the mission of the college. To achieve these goals, we need to develop new capabilities and strengths in new areas.

3.1 Build Internet presence. Develop content, technological infrastructure, and professional staff to build Berklee’s web-based capabilities for expanding the Berklee experience, including online and distance education, webcasts, and portal development. Use the Internet to build strategic alliances, and promote the college and its mission.

With the number of households connected to the Internet growing exponentially in the past few years, the World Wide Web is profoundly impacting communication, commerce, and education. According to a 1999 Harris Poll, the number of U.S. Internet users has increased to 56 percent from 9 percent of all Americans over the past four years. More than 54,000 different distance education courses were offered in 1998, enrolling about 1.6 million students. The Internet presents a tremendous opportunity to expand the scope of the Berklee experience.
Suggestions from the community that helped shape this initiative:
  • investigate distance learning models
  • discuss use of the World Wide Web for preparatory programs, remote clinicians, on-line curriculum
  • expand digital media resource availability
  • publish new media through Berklee Press
  • increase use of web for outreach
  • provide universal access to digital media

3.2 Create programs to develop a healthy two-way relationship with alumni. The college will provide programs to further learning, advance the alumni presence in the music industry, strengthen the alumni network, and support alumni creativity. The college will use technology as an important tool for reaching out to alumni worldwide.
Alumni involvement in an institution is an important strength of many colleges and universities. As a young institution with many alumni, this has yet to be a focus at Berklee. We now have an opportunity to create programs that will encourage alumni to give their talent and time to benefit students and alumni, and expand philanthropy.
Suggestions from the community that helped shape this initiative:
  • increase number and relevance of alumni development programs
  • provide directory and networking services via Internet
  • engage alumni in the life of the college
  • increase alumni participation on boards of visitors and trustees
  • create opportunities for alumni networking
  • offer online services to alumni

3.3 Increase institutional visibility. Conduct an image-building campaign that provides visibility for college initiatives and helps deepen and broaden respect for contemporary music and the mission of the college. Develop a clear and unified promotional message.
Berklee has high visibility and respect among music students and professionals. Other public sectors, including potential donors, do not have the same level of awareness of the college and its mission. We have the opportunity to conduct an image-building campaign that will increase respect and awareness for contemporary music and, in turn, the mission of the college.
Suggestions from the community that helped shape this initiative:
  • support community/neighborhood initiatives
  • expand Berklee Press publishing
  • seek support for institutional initiatives
  • explore options for radio broadcast
  • explore options for record company

3.4 Meet facility needs of the new vision. Identify and equip facility needs of new college vision. Evaluate real estate opportunities for other needs such as residence halls, student life space, technology production facilities, and additional performance venues.
To achieve many of the aims of the new Berklee vision, the college will need to improve existing and create new facilities.
Suggestions from the community that helped shape this initiative:
  • improve quality of classrooms and laboratories
  • improve number and quality of practice rooms
  • consider educational need for sound stage, concert hall
  • provide adequate office space for all faculty
  • create common areas for community interaction
  • improve residence halls
